Top o’ the mornin’ to you and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Today is also my birthday!

Did you know…

St. Patrick’s blue, not green, was the color long-associated with St. Patrick?

The color green may have gained its prominence through the phrase “the wearing of the green” meaning to wear a shamrock on ones clothing.  At many times in Irish history, to do so was seen as a sign of Irish nationalism or loyalty to the Roman Catholic faith.  St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish.  The wearing of and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the saint’s holiday.  The change to Ireland’s association with green rather than blue probably began around the 1750’s.

Some Protestants have begun wearing orange on St. Patrick’s Day as a mark of defiance.  This relatively new tradition has its roots in William of Orange (William III), the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, who defeated King James II, a Roman Catholic, in the Battle of the Boyne near Dublin.  This is why orange now appears in the Irish flag – to symbolize the Protestant minority in Ireland.  The first group to take part in the tradition of wearing orange on St. Patrick’s Day appears to have been the Orange Institution, a Protestant fraternal organization more commonly known as the Orange Order.

Today’s topic – Scratch and Sniff

- Scratch and sniff technology refers to things that have been treated with a micro-fragrance coating.  When scratched, the coating releases an odor that is normally related to an image being displayed under the coating.

- Scratch and sniff is created through the process of micro-encapsulation. The desired aroma is surrounded by tiny micro-capsules that break easily upon scratching. Because of the micro-encapsulation, the aroma can be preserved for extremely long periods of time.

Eric had a great birthday today.  We didn’t have a lot planned, but the weather was beautiful and in the 70s!  He spent the morning  with his church parking team working on a training video for new team members.  I saw some of the footage when he came back and it was awesome!  We had a relaxing afternoon and ended the day with a delicious dinner and some birthday cake.

My blog hit a milestone yesterday with 2,000 views!

2000

While this is exciting for me, this isn’t a huge number for most bloggers out there; a lot of the blogs I read have over 10,000 hits with a blog the same age as mine!  However, in an effort to meet  other bloggers and increase traffic on my blog I have signed up to be a SITSa!  The Sits Girls (the Secret is In The Sauce) have a great site where bloggers support each other with comments.  It’s such a great idea!  Each day you visit the SITS site and participate in the roll call by leaving a comment on the daily post.  From the roll call a blog is chosen to be the Feature Blog for the day which includes links to three posts.  Everyone then visits that blogger and leaves comments.  I’ve met a couple bloggers already and I’m really excited about joining the group!

It’s an old trick that everyone knows – you put a piece of bread in the container with home-made cookies to keep them soft.  But did you ever wonder why the bread gets hard while the cookies remain soft?

The answer has to do with humidity.  Bread is relatively moist and releases that moisture into the air.  This extra moisture is then absorbed into the sugar from the cookies allowing the cookies to maintain their softness.

Eric knew this, along with many others, but I did not until I looked it up.  Did you know the chemistry behind keeping cookies soft?

Do you ever have one of those days or evenings where things just don’t go the way you want them to?  Well, that happened to Eric and I tonight.

Strike 1 – We went to David’s Bridal to order my dress for my sister Katie’s wedding.  Rather than having to buy new shoes I decided to use the shoes from my wedding, since they were in pretty good condition, and just dye them.  Well, as it turns out, DB is now using a new water based dye and, since I had already worn my shoes, there was a chance that the oil on the shoes would mess up the dye.  They would not dye my shoes so I was forced to buy new ones (Eric was not very happy about that one).

Strike 2 – We had planned on going to Subway to pick up some dinner on the way home.  There is a Subway right by us where we usually go.  We attempted a trip last night on our way home from church, but they had closed early due to the weather.  We pull up tonight and they were closed again!  They didn’t even have a sign up to explain why!  I must add that the roads were clear and most of the snow had melted this afternoon, so there really was no reason why they should be closed (in our opinion).

Strike 3 – Since Subway was closed we decided to try the Quiznos down the road.  As we pull around the corner Eric started to (jokingly) say, “watch Quiznos is closed…..Oh you have got to be kidding me!”  Yep, they were closed too!

Strike 4 – After trying Quiznos we decided to try Q’doba.  Third times a charm!  However…

      Eric – “I’ll have a queso burrito”

Q-man – “Do you want that naked (in a bowl, no tortilla)?”

      Eric – “No thanks.”

Q-man – “Well, actually, our delivery truck got stuck in the ice and we don’t have any tortillas.”

Eric (chuckling) – “Well, I don’t have much of a choice then do I? I guess I’ll take it naked.”

Strike 5 - We went in to Target after dinner to pick up a couple things, one of which was going to be Toll House break and bake cookies (our favorite).  They were completely out and we had to settle for Pillsbury.

Strike 6 – Eric needed some new chap stick and he likes the medicated kind.  Completely out.  We ended up with the moisturizer.
