There are a few things that I never dreamed I would be interested in or really enjoy, until I met my husband.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

Just kidding, but really, I remember sitting in our family room about ten years ago with my uncle and cousin.  I came back to see what movie they were watching and it was Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.  I remember watching it for a few minutes and thinking that this was the most boring movie ever and that they were Star Wars nerds (sorry guys).  I never dreamed that I would sit through that movie again.

Flash forward…I start dating Eric.  Eric is a huge Star Wars fan.  Being the good girlfriend, I agreed to watch the movies with him.  Amazingly enough, I really liked them!  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched all six of the movies now, but I think Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is my favorite.  I even read the book!  Crazy.  Never in a million years would I imagine myself reading a Star Wars book.  I even have Obi-Wan and Yoda lightsabers (my favorite characters and the Yoda lightsaber lights up and has sound!).  This Christmas, I bought Eric the Star Wars Trivial Pursuit game.  When we play, he has to answer all of the questions on the card in order to move forward to make the game a little more challenging for him.  I must say, I impressed myself with some of the knowledge I have about the saga.

Then we go to the superheros.  This began for me by watching Smallville with Eric.  He got season one for Christmas one year and he made me watch it with him.  I had NO interest in watching a TV show about a young superman, but I ended up watching the whole season and loved it!  We now have through season 7 of the show and I can’t wait to see number 8!  Eric also introduced me to Fantastic 4, Spiderman, The Hulk, Iron Man and the X-Men.  My favorite movies are the X-Men movies with my favorite character being Wolverine (Hugh Jackman may have a small influence on me liking this character).  A couple days before the new Wolverine movie came out, my husband said “Before we go to see this movie, you have to read these first,” and he set down the Wolverine Origins comic books in front of me.  Ugh, really?  I have to read a comic book?  (Of course I didn’t have to read it, but I did anyways).  Good grief, what is wrong with me??  I actually liked them!  We just went to see the movie last night and it was amazing!

Next on the list that Eric is trying to get me to watch is Star Trek.  He has all of the movies on DVD.  Ugh, just the thought of watching them makes me sleepy.  However, the new Star Trek movie looks promising.  Maybe he will get me hooked after all.

Over the past couple months I’ve been playing around in Photoshop Elements and learning my way around the program.  This week, I’ve started to read different tutorials and blogs to learn how to use different effects in pictures.  I was looking around on The Crafty Cafe the other day and came across the Orton Effect.  This is such a fun effect to put on pictures and learning the proper techniques really makes me feel like a photo editor! (yes, I know I’m a nerd and I’m ok with that :) )  I used this effect on the pictures of our squirrel friend below.

I was reading another site today and read a tutorial on how to make animated lightning.  I didn’t want to get too far ahead of myself, so I just made lightning images.  I can’t seem to find the color balance option in Photoshop Elements, so I just played around with different background colors.

What do you think?  Does anyone have some Photoshop tips for a beginner?

Where Are My Peanuts?!

We have a small bowl on our balcony that we fill with peanuts for the squirrels and birds.  We try to keep the bowl full with nuts, but occasionally we will run out and the bowl won’t get refilled for a couple days.  This morning one of our squirrel friends brought to our attention that we were out of peanuts.

This little guy was perched on the railing for about twenty minutes crying for more peanuts.  He eventually tuckered out and just laid there the rest of the morning.  He was so patient waiting for the refill, so Eric made an emergency run down to CVS to get some more peanuts.  As soon as the bowl was filled up again, he came scurrying over to have a good meal.

My blog hit a milestone yesterday with 2,000 views!

2000

While this is exciting for me, this isn’t a huge number for most bloggers out there; a lot of the blogs I read have over 10,000 hits with a blog the same age as mine!  However, in an effort to meet  other bloggers and increase traffic on my blog I have signed up to be a SITSa!  The Sits Girls (the Secret is In The Sauce) have a great site where bloggers support each other with comments.  It’s such a great idea!  Each day you visit the SITS site and participate in the roll call by leaving a comment on the daily post.  From the roll call a blog is chosen to be the Feature Blog for the day which includes links to three posts.  Everyone then visits that blogger and leaves comments.  I’ve met a couple bloggers already and I’m really excited about joining the group!

Struck Out

Do you ever have one of those days or evenings where things just don’t go the way you want them to?  Well, that happened to Eric and I tonight.

Strike 1 – We went to David’s Bridal to order my dress for my sister Katie’s wedding.  Rather than having to buy new shoes I decided to use the shoes from my wedding, since they were in pretty good condition, and just dye them.  Well, as it turns out, DB is now using a new water based dye and, since I had already worn my shoes, there was a chance that the oil on the shoes would mess up the dye.  They would not dye my shoes so I was forced to buy new ones (Eric was not very happy about that one).

Strike 2 – We had planned on going to Subway to pick up some dinner on the way home.  There is a Subway right by us where we usually go.  We attempted a trip last night on our way home from church, but they had closed early due to the weather.  We pull up tonight and they were closed again!  They didn’t even have a sign up to explain why!  I must add that the roads were clear and most of the snow had melted this afternoon, so there really was no reason why they should be closed (in our opinion).

Strike 3 – Since Subway was closed we decided to try the Quiznos down the road.  As we pull around the corner Eric started to (jokingly) say, “watch Quiznos is closed…..Oh you have got to be kidding me!”  Yep, they were closed too!

Strike 4 – After trying Quiznos we decided to try Q’doba.  Third times a charm!  However…

      Eric – “I’ll have a queso burrito”

Q-man – “Do you want that naked (in a bowl, no tortilla)?”

      Eric – “No thanks.”

Q-man – “Well, actually, our delivery truck got stuck in the ice and we don’t have any tortillas.”

Eric (chuckling) – “Well, I don’t have much of a choice then do I? I guess I’ll take it naked.”

Strike 5 - We went in to Target after dinner to pick up a couple things, one of which was going to be Toll House break and bake cookies (our favorite).  They were completely out and we had to settle for Pillsbury.

Strike 6 – Eric needed some new chap stick and he likes the medicated kind.  Completely out.  We ended up with the moisturizer.

Grandfather Mountain

Last Saturday, Eric and I took a trip up to the mountains for some hiking.  After looking at a few websites, we found a good trail by Grandfather Mountain that we wanted to try.  So I looked up where to get the hiking permits, got directions to the location and we were set!  Or so I thought…

We drove up to Blowing Rock (a good 2 hours north of Charlotte) and made our way along a winding, mountain road to find a marketplace at the intersections of two roads.  Well, we pulled up and found the place boarded up for the season.  I guess I should have looked up the seasonal hours or called to make sure they were open – whoops!  We decided to take a drive and try and find the trail anyways.  I had written down that the trail was at mile 299.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so we headed off.  Well, at mile 299.0 the Parkways was closed off for the season – second whoops!

I remembered reading about the Grandfather Mountain park online and we decided to go there for some hiking, but neither of us knew where exactly it was.  We made a few calls and finally got a hold of my mom.  She looked up the number online, we called and got directions and then we made our way over to Linville.

We ended up having to pay a bit more to get into the park than we were planning, but it was worth it.  Eric and I first took a trail up to their Mile High Swinging Bridge.  It was a gorgeous view!

We then headed off on one of the trails up the mountain.  This trail included ladders and cables which literally went straight up the side of the mountain!

The trails were mostly covered in ice and it was so windy!  There were times during the hike that I was scared we were going to be blown off the mountain, but we made it!

All-in-all it was a great day and we are looking forward to going back when it’s a bit warmer!

Last week we had our first snowfall of the year!

There was less than an inch on the ground and the roads were already clear by the time we got up.

This was Maddy’s first look at snow.

We were excited to see the snow, but this is nothing compared to what we’re used to up north!

Ending the day by a warm fire.
