Figgy Pudding

I’ve started working on my next quilt – a Christmas quilt using fabric from the Figgy Pudding line by Basic Grey for Moda.  I am in love with this fabric.  The colors and prints are beautiful!  I’ve seen quite a few quilts made with this fabric, but the pattern below is my favorite and I was able to download this pattern for free!

I’ve completed the piecing on the 8 square (“courthouse”) blocks.  I am getting much better at the construction of my quilts.  The cutting, pressing and piecing is getting much easier than when I started.

This quilt is going to be HUGE compared to the other two I made this summer.  The finished quilt should measure around 66″ x 82″!  I’m  trying to just enjoy the piecing stage and not worry too much about how I’m going to be able to quilt this thing.

I used straight line  quilting on the quilts I made for my sisters this summer, but my goal is to free motion this quilt.  I purchased a darning foot for my sewing machine a few weeks ago (for less than $8!) and have been practicing on some scrap fabric.  I’m getting better, but I have a long way to go!

I love how these blocks turned out and I’m hoping that the tree blocks will go together just as well.  I’m also excited because I already have a lot of left-over fabric!  I’m trying to decide what I want to make next with the extra fabric.  Perhaps a table topper or stockings.  Any suggestions?

Well, my vacation has started!  The next couple weeks are going to be super busy and it all starts tomorrow!  I’m going to pick up the Flanagan’s from the airport beginning at 10 AM – well, the ones that can make it anyways.  My girlfriends from college and I get together each year for a reunion.  This year it’s my turn to host!  The picture below is from our reunion last year in D.C.

On Sunday, Eric and I will begin our trip up to Ohio to visit his parent’s for a couple days.  Wednesday we’ll head over to Grosse Pointe and will arrive in time for my sister Mary’s bridal shower.  Then, the festivities for Katie’s wedding will begin on Friday!  Like I said, it’s going to be a busy week but I’m looking forward to every minute of it!

The other day I  tried out a recipe for homemade Oreos.  I got this book for Christmas and found the recipe in there.

cookies-11

It was a pretty easy recipe and fun to make!  This was my first time making a chocolate cookie from scratch.

cookies-2

The instructions say to use a 1-1/4″ scoop for the cookies, but the smallest I had was 1-1/2″.  The cookies turned out huge!

On my next batch of this cookie, I will definitely make them smaller.  The cream filling was extremely sweet and overall the cookies are pretty rich.  I’ll probably make some bite size cookies next time around.

Campin’ in Waxhaw

July 16, 2008 at 7:07 pm | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Over the July 4th weekend I went on my first camping trip!  I’ve been “camping” before with the Girl Scouts (we were in cabins with full kitchens and bathrooms) and I’ve slept in a tent before at the cottage in Bayfield, but I’ve never been camping.  Eric, Jessi, Kelly, Erika and I went down to Waxhaw, NC to Cane Creek Park for some camping fun!  We arrived on Thursday evening and set up our campsite.

Thursday night we got settled and sat around the campfire for a while before hitting the hay.  I made my way to the bath house to brush my teeth and take out my contacts.  Now, I hate bugs and I was expecting to see some along the way, but I was not prepared for what I saw.  There was a huge moth on the wall of the bath house that was nasty, but I slowly walked by it and made my way to the door.  Nothing was there that I couldn’t handle so I opened the door and right in the door way was a huge cockroach.  I let the door close and jumped back about three feet.  I took a couple deep breaths and tried to pump myself up to get by it (cmon Meg, you’re 25 years old, it’s just a bug, you can do it!).  I pushed the door open again and then the cockroach started moving…I could not do it.  Gives me the creeps just thinking about it now.  I ended up brushing my teeth in a cup of water and that was that.

Friday morning we ate a hearty breakfast of corned beef hash, potatoes, bagels and fruit.  We then looked at the park map to decide which trail we wanted to hike.  We decided on the 2 mile hike to the other side of the park where there was a public beach.  We filled our water bottles, packed our swim suits and were on our way.  I was not expecting this to be a strenuous hike and, while it wasn’t strenuous, it sure wasn’t easy either!  Nor was it 2 miles, it was 3!  Add in the 90 degree heat and humidity, I was ready to jump in that water!  We made it to the beach and looked across the lake and saw that there was another beach on the other side of the lake in the camping area.  While swimming in the lake, we were trying to think of ways to avoid the 3 mile hike back.  I said that we should rent a canoe, take people accross with our bags to the camping beach, then I would drop the canoe off and swim across the lake; the others didn’t think much of that idea though, so it was on to the trail.  The hike back seemed to go a little bit faster, thank goodness!  The rest of the afternoon was spent napping and reading.

Friday night, some more friends joined us at the campsite for a late night campfire with hot dogs and smores.  It was a wonderful evening and the food was deeeeelicious!  Saturday morning Jessi, Kelly, Erika and Ben went on another hike while Eric and I chose to stay at the site and read and relax.  Once the others returned we enjoyed a nice lunch and then packed up to head home.

They Just Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To

Guest blogger: Eric Welch

Ok, so, I think this has been coming for a while now.  I’ve been telling my wife that I would hack her blog and be a guest blogger one day.  Well, that day has arrived.  So sit back, relax, grab a soda (yes, I said ‘soda’ – you southerners refer to it as ‘coke,’ but soda rhymes with ‘Yoda,’ and Yoda’s the man, so we’re running with it) and prepare to delve into the mysterious chasm that is my mind.

I titled this blog entry “They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.”  You may be thinking I’m going to delve into some deep philosophical discussion, or that I’m referring to the quality of today’s automobile, or whatever.  Sorry, no.  Today we will be looking at…cartoons & classic TV shows.

The cartoons of today’s generation are nothing compared to the cartoons that I grew up with.  I think that my generation may have been the last to experience what I call a “real” cartoon.  Like the old school Daffy Duck, Mighty Mouse, Porky Pig, Popeye, etc.  You get the idea.  Now there’s Sponge Bob Square Pants, and Rugrats: The Next Generation, or something.  Whatever happened to the good old days?  I know, I know, if you’re older than me you’re thinking “you don’t know what the ‘good old days’ were son!”  But those cartoons were, for me at least, the good old days, even though they were re-runs.  Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with Sponge Bob Square Pants; I’ve never watched it, but I hear it’s good.  All I’m saying is that they just don’t make ‘em like they used to.  Full-blown hand drawn cartoons are quickly becoming a thing of the past.  More and more cartoons incorporate CG into their shows.  Now I love CG, but not for Saturday morning cartoons.  To me, they just look too “real,” or fake, however you look at it.  The hand drawn stuff of old is where it’s at.

Remember when cartoons used to have a moral at the end of the story?  Like at the end of He-Man, for example, someone would always say “In today’s story, Orko learned a valuable lesson about stealing….yadda yadda yadda.”  Or the ever popular G.I. Joe; they’d always say something at the end of the show like “G.I. Joe says ‘don’t smoke!’” or, “Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!”  When was the last time a cartoon of today’s age gave a lesson and a moral?  Now that doesn’t mean that you can’t pick up good, moral-centered themes throughout some of these new shows, but it seems like today’s cartoons are all about entertainment.

Remember Sharon, Lois & Bram’s Elephant Show (skinnamarink a dink-e-dink, skinnamarink e-doo, I love you!)?  Remember singing that with the arm gestures that went with it?  When was the last time you watched a cartoon or show where the performers said “I love you” to little children?  I don’t think that would fly too well in today’s world.  Remember Today’s Special?  David the GnomeThe SmurfsInspector Gadget (did he EVER catch Dr. Claw?!)?  Eureka’s CastleDumbo’s flying circusPinwheelReading RainbowFraggle Rock?  Ok, so those last one’s weren’t cartoons…but they were still good!

Those shows are classics! Oh well.  I guess I’ll just have to buy some of ‘em on DVD so someday my kids can watch the good stuff!

Jib Jab

Jib Jab is the best hot dog shoppe in the world.  It is located in Girard, Ohio close to the town where Eric grew up.  Eric and his friends would frequent the restaurant in high school and Eric once at 13 hot dogs in one sitting!  If you’re ever in the area you have to go!

Jib Jab is also a website where you can insert photos of yourself and others into funny videos.  This video was sent to me by my sister Katie on St. Patrick’s Day.  Enjoy!

Did I Ever Tell You…

…The summer after my high school graduation, my best friend Liz received four tickets to any summer concert at DTE Energy Music Theater (formerly known as Pine Knob).  She chose to go see Aerosmith and invited me to come.  We had amazing seats and Aerosmith was unbelievably fantastic in concert!  The theater is an outside theater with a stage and covered seating and then lawn seating in the back.  Well, Aerosmith had a second stage set up out by the lawn and, in the middle of the concert, made their way down the aisles to get to the second stage.  Our seats were right by one of the aisles and on their way down, I was literally right next to the band.  I got to say hi to Steven Tyler and I touched Joe Perry’s arm!  Hey, I know this was not a big deal, but this was my one and only celebrity close encounter!

Yesterday I went out and purchased my copy of the Guitar Hero Aerosmith game…and it ROCKS!  I have to say, I was expecting the game to just be a play list of Aerosmith hits but that is not the case.  In each round, you start as an opening act and have to pass two songs before Aerosmith comes out.  As the guitar player, you get to be Joe Perry!  In terms of the Aerosmith songs you play, as you progress in your career you get to play the bigger hits.  So far I have played songs such as Livin’ on the Edge, Rag Doll, Sweet Emotion and Love in an Elevator.  I’ve also purchased the songs Walk This Way (original version) and Pink.  I’m addicted all over again.

Today I would like to dedicate this post to my wonderful husband, Eric.

10 things I love about my husband (in no particular order):

1 – I love the way he makes me laugh.  Eric is so silly and goofy and makes me laugh everyday!

2 – I love that he is romantic.  For instance, the other day he came home, gave me a hug, took my hand and brought me into our office, turned on We Will Dance by Steven Curtis Chapman (the song we danced to at our wedding) and we danced…just because.

3 – I love the feeling of safety I get when he holds me in his arms.

4 – He is a kid at heart.  Every time we go to Target, no matter what we need to get there, we always make a trip down the toy aisle!

5 – I love when he sings to me.

6 – He is my best friend and I love hanging out with him.

7 – I love that he has a strong relationship with God.

8 – He treats me like a princess!

9 – He is gorgeous!

10 – He loves me for me…despite all of my flaws.

I love you Eric!

The Island Legend

The new picture on my header is of the bridge crossing Lake Marian to the island on the Saint Mary’s College campus.  According to legend, the first guy to take you across the bridge will be the guy you marry.  When Eric and I were dating, he would come to visit me for the day on Saturday’s.  One Saturday, we were sitting on a bench by the lake and (without my asking) he got up, took my hand and led me across the bridge – he was the first guy to take me across the bridge.  He did not know of this legend at the time and this was pretty early on in our relationship, so I didn’t tell him about it for fear of scaring him away!  I did tell him eventually and he thought it was pretty cool.  Flash forward a couple years…Eric and I were heading to Notre Dame to take one of his friends on a tour of the campus.  Eric said that his friend Rob was going to ND for grad school and he volunteered us to show him around campus.  Of course I was excited to do this – I love ND and I would be able to see SMC as well!  Rob was going to have a meeting with an adviser around 11am, so we were going to meet him there for a morning tour.  We got in the car around 6am to make the 2 hour trip.  Along the drive, Eric would call Rob to make sure they were on the road, see how far behind they were, etc.  I also made a couple calls to my parents to see what size shirt my dad wore (so I could get him the new student shirt) and see if I should get my grandpa a hat or anything – for some reason, Eric didn’t seem to pleased that I was making these calls.  We were going to be meeting Rob at Saint Mary’s since he had been there before and knew where to go.  Well, I insisted that Eric and I stop at the ND bookstore first because it was freshman move-in weekend and I didn’t want them to sell out of the student shirts!  For some reason, he didn’t seem too pleased about that either.  Well, we finally made it to SMC and made our way across the bridge and onto the island.  We took a seat on a bench to wait for Rob…but Rob never came.  After a few minutes, Eric proposed.  All the phone calls in the car were a hoax and he wasn’t pleased about my calls to my parents because they knew what was happening that morning (he had talked with them a couple weeks earlier and asked their permission) and he was afraid they would say congratulations too early.

So that is the Saint Mary’s island legend and how it came true for me!
